Understanding Silver Purity & Value

Silver Markings & What They Mean

Marking Purity Common Items Value
.999 or "Fine Silver" 99.9% Pure Bullion bars, rounds Highest value per ounce
.925 or "Sterling" 92.5% Pure Jewelry, flatware 92.5% of spot price
900 or "Coin Silver" 90% Pure Pre-1965 US coins 90% of spot price
800 80% Pure European silver 80% of spot price
EPNS or "Silver Plate" Minimal silver Plated flatware Limited scrap value only

💡 How to Identify Sterling Silver

  • Look for stamps: .925, Sterling, or STER on the item
  • Check for tarnish: Real silver tarnishes; it turns black/gray when exposed to air
  • Weight: Silver is heavy - if it feels light, it may be plated
  • Magnet test: Silver is not magnetic (but this isn't 100% reliable)
  • When in doubt: Bring it in! We'll test it for free

  • Walking Liberty & Franklin half dollars

Scrap & Broken Silver

Condition doesn't matter when we're buying for silver content:

  • Broken or damaged jewelry
  • Tangled chains
  • Single earrings (missing partner)
  • Bent or dented items
  • Tarnished silver

We pay for the silver, not the condition!

Silver Selling FAQs

How much is my silver worth?

Silver value depends on current spot prices, purity, and weight. Sterling silver (.925) is worth 92.5% of the silver spot price per ounce. For example, if silver is $25/oz, your sterling is worth about $23/oz. Call us at 212-840-0415 for today's prices.

Do you buy silver-plated items?

We evaluate silver-plated items, but they typically have minimal value since they contain very little actual silver. Sterling silver (marked .925) is what we primarily buy. However, bring plated items in - some have value depending on weight and brand.

What's the difference between sterling silver and silver plate?

Sterling silver is 92.5% pure silver throughout the entire item. Silver plate is a thin layer of silver over a base metal (usually brass or copper). Sterling has significant melt value; plate has minimal value. Look for .925 or STERLING stamps to identify real silver.

Should I clean my silver before selling?

No need! Tarnish doesn't affect the value since we're buying based on silver content. Save yourself the effort - we don't pay more for polished silver.

Do you buy silver coins?

Absolutely! We buy all silver coins including American Silver Eagles, Canadian Maple Leafs, pre-1965 US coins (90% silver), Morgan dollars, Peace dollars, and foreign silver coins. Numismatic value is evaluated separately from silver content.

How do you determine the price you pay?

We base our offers on the current silver spot price, which changes daily. We weigh your items, determine purity, and pay a high percentage of melt value - typically 85-95% of spot price depending on quantity and purity.

What if I have a large collection or estate?

We handle estates of all sizes! For large collections, we can arrange private appointments and even visit your location in some cases. We have the capital to handle substantial transactions.

Do I need to sort my silver before coming in?

No sorting necessary! Bring everything together - we'll test and sort it for you. Mixed items are fine.

What payment methods do you offer?

We offer immediate cash payment, certified check, or bank transfer (ACH) depending on your preference and transaction size.

Is there a minimum amount you'll buy?

No minimum! Whether you have one sterling ring or 100 pounds of flatware, we're interested in buying your silver.
